Baseball Recap: Lions sitting at 6-5 with two remaining/Crooks Breaks two Records!
Lawrence Upper Lions finishing up
It was a proper cat-fight when Lawrence Upper faced off against Bedford on Thursday. The Lions came out on top against the Bearcats by a score of 10-7. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Lions.
Max Samac made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Samac was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Lawrence Upper's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 5-1 (and 1-3 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Asher Davis, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two RBI and one run. Another player making a difference was Jordan Jackson, who went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Lawrence Upper pushed their record up to 6-4 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for Bedford, they now have a losing record of 5-6.
Lawrence Upper wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next match, an 11-1 defeat against Medina Christian Academy on the 13th in the Conference Semi Finals, dropping them to 6-5.
With the two games, Sophomore Will Crooks set two pitching records. The first against Bedford, where Crooks struckout 13 batters, solidifying him as Lawrence Schools All Time Strikeout Career Leader, surpassing former teammate Hunter James '24. "Setting a career record as only a sophomore is incredible and can't imagine what his final record will be when he graduates in two years!", said Coach Cioffoletti.
The next game, Crooks only needed 1 more strikeout to break another former teammate, Adam Cornelius '23, record of 52ks in a season. Crooks did just that with nine strikeouts giving him, 61 on the year!
The Lions head to Jose Ramirez Field for a matchup with Garrett Morgan at 5pm on Thursday May 15th, followed by another road game at Crestwood High on Friday, which will commence the season!
