Fader #5 Retired!
Girls Basketball legend gets #5 Jersey retired!
Over their four years with us, Zarina rewrote the record books. Z is Lawrence School’s all-time leader in points scored and steals, a testament to her versatility and dominance on the court. But beyond the numbers, it was her leadership and sportsmanship that truly set her apart. Zarina had the unique ability to elevate those around her, pushing her teammates to give their best while always keeping the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie alive.
As an eight grader dominating the Middle School level, we had no choice but to move Z up for to the Varsity team balancing two squads in one year. That year Z, averaged 7ppg and their future looked bright. Freshman year followed as Zarina solidified the starting PG role doubling their scoring from the previous year, at 16ppg and help lead the most successful basketball team in school history to the championship game and completing an incredible and unforgettable 18-4 record. Unfortunately her greatness was holted by a 2020 covid canceled sophomore season. That did not stop Z from jumping into Junior year with absolute full steam ahead and no regard to human life, scoring 593 points that season, which averaged to 38 ppg which was #1 in the entire state of Ohio, including 36 three pointers, another school record. The second game of the year that season Z, broke the previous record of 40pts in a game by dropping a staggering 51pts. Not to out do themselves, three games later, broke their own record with 52pt performance.
Their senior year, Zarina again, average 38ppg (#1 in Ohio in consecutive seasons) scoring another 500pts for the season. And yes, Z hit 50pts in a game for the third time in their career with 54, setting a record that I dont think will ever be beat.
Zarina’s clutch performances under pressure and her unwavering focus in the face of adversity made her a true leader on and off the court.
But Zarina’s impact extends far beyond basketball. She is a role model who embodies the core values of Lawrence School: integrity, perseverance, and community. Whether it was mentoring younger players, volunteering in local initiatives, or excelling in her academic pursuits, Zarina has shown us all what it means to be a champion in every sense of the word.
Following Lawrence, Z went on to play a season at Cuyahoga Community College, averaging 8ppg and scoring a total of 252pts.
Tonight, as we prepare to hang their jersey in the gym, we ensure that Zarina’s legacy will forever be a part of Lawrence School’s story. Number 5 will stand as a symbol of excellence, a reminder to every young athlete that hard work, passion, and teamwork can lead to greatness.
You have left an indelible mark on all of us, and we are so proud of the player and person you have become. As your jersey takes its rightful place in history, know that you will always have a home here at Lawrence School, and your legacy will continue to inspire.
Here’s to Zarina, a true legend.
